English Tutors in Los Angeles:
“Building on your Strengths while Eliminating your Weak Points”
At Strommen Tutoring services in English are tailored to your individual needs regardless of age or skill level; therefore the first step in our methodology is locating your strengths and weaknesses. This is a universal technique, whether you are a high school student, college student, or someone who has no formal English training. Our English tutors are enthusiastic and passionate about the English language.
“A Bilingual Approach to ESL”
Los Angeles is a wonderfully multicultural city (over 224 languages spoken!) but the ability to speak, read, and write effectively in English is essential. Because many of our English tutors are also bilingual we have the ability to provide an English course specifically for your needs and cultural background. This unique ability makes us a great choice for helping students develop confidence and quickly excel. These classes are often held in public locations, which provide excellent opportunities for the student to use what he or she is learning. The unique curriculum will produce fast-working results by implementing our ‘multilateral’ approach. By developing the ear we give students the ability to correct themselves, like a native speaker does.
Curriculum:
You will have the opportunity to learn or review basics such as: grammar, vocabulary, accent elimination, composition, structure, style, pronunciation, and analysis through a fun yet effective curriculum while simultaneously refining your natural strong points. More advanced students can perfect essential English skills like: paper outlining, essay composition, style, research-paper formatting, finding the perfect sources, book analysis and notation techniques, literary terms, critical analysis, in-class test taking strategies, advanced grammar, vocabulary, and mnemonic devices.
“Guiding you to your individual Educational Goals”
Whether you are seeking extra help for your teenager's demanding High-School English curriculum, or to finally improve your conversational English skills after many years in the US, we feel that a new energetic and enthusiastic attitude can often make the most difference. The biggest change is made when this positive and engaging attitude is coupled with a proven curriculum and methodology. Furthermore, at Strommen Tutoring we take no request or suggestion for granted; indeed, guiding you to your individual educational goals is what we strive for.
Our ESL and Accent Reduction Teachers:
Rob - Accent Coach and Accent Reduction Specialist:
I began my classical training in St. Louis , where I acquired my BFA. I completed my Master of Fine Arts degree at Cal State Fullerton where I received academic scholarships for my work in voice and speech. I received them for my involvement in conducting workshops on various dialects, substitute teaching for my voice professor, and for providing many hours of individual and group coaching with well over 100 students. I currently teach 1 on 1 accent reduction and dialect coaching with American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Strommen Tutoring. I work with actors trying to neutralize foreign accents and personal regionalisms as well as individuals and business professionals. In 3 years, I have coached over 25 shows, most of which called for a great deal of accent reduction.
Cle: English in the Valley, Hollywood and Los Angeles Area
I have been teaching ESL to people of all ages from all around the world for the past 11 years. My goal is to build students’ confidence so they feel comfortable speaking in English. Classes are lively, personal, interactive and fun. We focus on pronunciation, vocabulary (including slang), grammar, listening, conversation and accent reduction. With advanced students, writing and literature are included. In addition to teaching, I have been involved in the performing arts, both as an actress and currently, a jazz vocalist.
Jeff: ESL in Pasedena, Glendale, East Side, West La and Los Angeles Area
Hi my name is Jeff. I have successfully taught English Literature and English-As-A-Second-Language(ESL) at Eagle Rock High School in Los Angeles for 15 years. My students, including those with disabilities and language deficits, improved greatly in their test scores, speaking ability, and college-readiness during my tenure. Additionally, I have been a Special Education (Autism/Down-Syndrome etc.) Teacher's Assistant as a "side career," at Almansor Academy for Special Needs Students in South Pasadena, and have a son with Autism. Moreover, I have taught ESL to an Asian adult school audience in the Wilshire District and San Gabriel Valley, and have traveled extensively through nine foreign countries. I graduated from California State University with a BA and a California Teaching Credential in English with specialized courses completed for the Instruction of Non-English and Limited-English Speakers (ESL).
SPECIAL ENGLISH COURSES:
Cynthia: ESL and English for Portuguese Speakers
Teaching and learning languages has always been a passion of mine, so when my students ask me why I like teaching Portuguese and English so much, this beautiful quotation by Nelson Mandela comes to mind: “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.” I am a native of São Paulo, Brazil who has taught ESL for more than twenty years. I’ve been living in the United States since 1994. Before coming to the U.S.A, I had extensive experience in teaching ESL to Brazilian business people, executives and professionals of major financial institutions and corporations in the city of São Paulo. I use the communicative approach in my style of teaching by using the following steps: 1) Presentation 2) Explanation (done in the target language as much as possible) 3) Practice (including reading and writing) 4) Production (including reading and writing) I do not believe in lecturing, and try to keep the teacher-student talk time respectively at a 30% and 70% ratio as much as it is possible to do so. My academic background is one hundred percent language oriented. I graduated in Translation and Interpretation with an emphasis on Portuguese and Brazilian literature and a preparatory course on English and American literature at Curso objetivo and Faculdade Ibero Americana. Both institutions are in São Paulo. Because I was once an ESL student myself, I am able to fully comprehend the learning process involved while learning a second language. Teaching Portuguese offers a unique opportunity for me to be reconnected with my native language and have the pleasure of seeing my students discover, learn, practice and use Portuguese and eventually master this beautiful language in all its richness and complexity.
Hannah: Based in Culver City
Hi, Ni hao! My name is Hannah. I enjoy teaching English to speakers of Mandarin because I make the process seem fun and easy! 1 on 1 classes with me will be much more effective than group classes, and the cost is very close. My qualifications and honors include a 4.0 in Chinese & Spanish at the University of Illinois, I am the winner of the Illinois Taiwan Consortium Fellowship and attended the prestigious International Chinese Language Program at TaiDa University in Taipei, Taiwan.
